Sam Matson and Team Chatham – Solitaire Success!

Sam Matson and Team Chatham - La Solitaire du Figaro 2015

‘Team Chatham’ is celebrating - our sponsored sailor, Sam Matson, finished thirteenth overall in the 2015 Solitaire Du Figaro – Eric Bompard Cachemire. We’ve been sponsoring Sam since the beginning of the season - check out our earlier blog post to find out more about Sam’s ‘Chatham’ sponsorship and how he prepared for La Solitaire du Figaro, the jewel in the crown of Classe Figaro Bénéteau racing.

Sam’s La Solitaire du Figaro Preparations

After months of tough training and some great results in the earlier races in the season – 12th in the Solo Basse Normandie, 24th in the Solo Maitre Coq and 11th in the Solo Concarneau – Sam headed to France in his Figaro, ‘Chatham’, at the end of May to make his final preparations for the big race.

Sam’s busy programme of events in Bordeaux included taking a tour of the Château Mouton Rothschild with the rest of the British skippers from the Artemis Offshore Academy – who were kitted out in Chatham Men’s Carnaby Brogues – and doing a spot of deck shoe selling on the Chatham stand. Sam and the rest of the fleet departed from France on Sunday 31 May to begin the 2,185 mile race.

La Solitaire du Figaro 2015 - Leg One - Paulliac to Sanxenxo

Sam Matson and Chatham on Leg One

Sam Matson and Chatham during Leg 2 of La Solitaire du Figaro

After an excellent start, Sam’s progress on Leg 1 was hampered by difficulties, as he explained to Artemis Offshore Academy:

By the middle of Biscay I was in a bit of a dark spot. There wasn’t any AIS information, so you couldn’t see where the fleet was. I was basically sailing blind.”

It wasn’t just technical problems that made life tough for Sam, either. He went on to say: “I narrowly missed a shark when I was approaching the finish! I also ended up towing a fishing net for a while. It was a bit of a nightmare.”

However, Sam pushed on and his hard work was rewarded - he made up places as they sailed around Cape Finnisterre and crossed the line in 15th place.

La Solitaire du Figaro 2015 - Leg Two - Sanxenxo to La Cornouaille

Sam Matson and Chatham on Leg Two of La Solitaire

Sam Matson and Chatham during Leg 2 of La Solitaire du Figaro

After a well-deserved rest in Sanxenxo, Spain, the fleet set off for La Cornouaille, in Southern Brittany. However, their initial attempt at Leg 2 had to be annulled due to poor weather conditions and the dismasting of Corentin Horeau’s Figaro, Bretagne Crédit Mutuel Performance. The skippers enjoyed an unplanned pit stop at La Coruna before heading off again for a second attempt on a revised and shorter course. Leg 2 was a tough challenge for Sam, but he crossed the line in 20th place, putting him in 17th position overall.

La Solitaire du Figaro 2015 - Leg 3 – La Cornouaille to Torbay

Gilles Chiorri, Race Director of the 2015 Solitaire Du Figaro – Eric Bompard Cachemire, decided that the winds were too light to send the sailors on the planned route for Leg 3 so, on 14 June 2015, the fleet set off for the UK following a shortened course to Birvideaux, up the Iroise Sea, around the island of Batz and the Wolf Rock lighthouse, and into Tor Bay.

For Sam, arriving in Torbay was set to be a particularly special occasion, as he told Artemis Offshore Academy: It’s home for me – Torquay is only 12 miles from where I was brought up, and I’ve spent most of my life sailing around Torbay. It’s where we used to keep the family boat!”  After crossing the line in 16th place, Sam moved into 14th position overall.

Sam Matson and Chatham – The UK Stopover

The UK La Solitaire du Figaro Stopover certainly drew the crowds to Torbay and the weather was glorious too. There were plenty of events to enjoy, including the Pro-Am Race, talks from some of the skippers and a fantastic fireworks display. Ladies’ Day was particularly special, with some of Sam’s friends and family winning a bottle of Pol Roger champagne for their attention-grabbing, hand-crafted Chatham hats.

La Solitaire du Figaro - Leg 4 – Torbay to Dieppe

Sam Matson and Nick Cherry after La Solitaire Leg 4

Sam Matson (left) and Nick Cherry (right) after La Solitaire du Figaro 2015

Sam and the rest of the skippers set off from Tor Bay for the final leg of the race on 21st June 2015, sailing around Tor Bay before heading along the South West Coast to round Land’s End. The tracker in ‘Chatham’ malfunctioned during the leg, so we were reliant on progress updates from Artemis Offshore Racing, making for some nervous nail-biting at the Team Chatham HQ.

Light winds in the English Channel and tidal issues caused some huge shake-ups in the positions as the leg progressed and Sam put in a stunning performance to climb up the ranks. He finished the leg in tenth place – and secured 13th position overall in the 2015 Solitaire Du Figaro – Eric Bompard Cachemire.

Congratulations, Sam, from all at Chatham, on your superb season and amazing La Solitaire du Figaro result!

Our sponsored sailor, Sam Matson, who recently finished in thirteenth place in the prestigious La Solitaire du Figaro, is also a fan of these practical sailing shoes. He told us:

“Following 2000 nautical miles of challenging offshore racing during La Solitaire du Figaro, Chatham’s Aqua-Go G2 Performance sailing shoes lived up to all my hopes and expectations, providing immense grip and comfort. The design allowed for rapid drainage of water, resulting in almost instant drying after I had some unwelcome water on deck.  A recommended essential for all sailing kit bags!”

Team Chatham will be heading to the Isle of Wight this week for a regatta that’s the centrepiece of many sailors’ calendars, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. This prestigious event, which takes place between 8 and 15 August 2015, is one of the largest sailing regattas in the world and Chatham is proud to be its Official Footwear Sponsor.

Read on to find out more about what’s going on at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and what we’ll be doing there.

Cowes Week is one of Britain’s oldest sailing regattas, with its inaugural event having taken place in 1826. Known for its thrilling races and spectacular shoreside entertainment, it appeals to both keen sailors and families looking for some summer holiday fun. The regatta attracts more than 8,500 competitors and 100,000 spectators to the Isle of Wight each year, and the 2015 event is set to be a bumper one.

Events are open to everyone, so spectators get the chance to watch amateur sailors taking on some of the best in the business, including Olympians and World Champions. With between 800 and 1,000 keelboats, divided into 40 classes, speeding across the Solent during the eight day event, there’s always something going on in the water.

There’s something for everyone at Cowes Week this year. Sunday 9 August is Family Day – you can sign your family up for a sailing lesson organised by Chatham partners and official regatta charity UKSA, let your little ones be the envy of landlubbers when they join in the pirate action with Gemma Hunt, from CBeebies’ ‘Swashbuckle’, or even test out your boat-building skills in the UKSA Cardboard Boat Race.

Cowes Week celebrates the contribution and achievement of women in sailing on Thursday 11 August with Liz Earle Ladies’ Day. There will be special events at various shoreside locations as well as a ‘Best Dressed’ competition, and the ‘Ladies Day Trophy’ for an outstanding contribution, commitment or achievement by a woman or women in sailing will be presented to the winner or winners at a glitzy evening reception.

On-water highlights include the Artemis Challenge, in which some of the world’s best sailors and some celebrity guests race IMOCA 60s, Volvo 65s and multihulls in a 50 mile around-the-island sprint, with the crew of the fastest IMOCA 60 securing a whopping £10,000 for their chosen charity.

Cowes Week visitors will also be treated to a display by the Red Arrows at 18.50 on Thursday 13 August and an RAF Typhoon display just before the famous Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Fireworks Display kicks off on Friday 14 August.

We’ll also be presenting our partners, UKSA, with a cheque for the money raised so far from the sale of our award-nominated Men’s Aqua-Go G2 Performance Sailing Shoes at a glamourous Chatham party on Wednesday 12 August, where we’ll also be celebrating our links with Cowes Week and introducing our new SS16 Made in Britain collection.

Our sponsored sailor, Sam Matson, fresh from a successful La Solitaire du Figaro, will be at Cowes Week with us all week and will be teaming up with Alice Driscoll, Managing Director of our PR company, ADPR, to compete as Team Chatham in the ‘One Hour Victory Race’. Last year, Alice, together with Chatham brand ambassador and Olympic silver medallist, Heather Fell, won the event for Team Chatham, so the pressure’s on for a repeat performance!

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to win some gorgeous Chatham shoes during Cowes Week too. We’ll be running a photo competition at the event, plus we’ll be giving a pair of Chathams away every day in conjunction with Cowes Radio – so keep an eye on the Chatham Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts throughout Cowes Week to find out more.

Loafers – The Ideal Summer Style Solution

Chatham Women's Simone Leather Penny Loafers - Blue

Chatham Women’s Simone Leather Penny Loafers - Blue

When the temperature is soaring, it can be difficult to know what footwear to choose, particularly when smart casual is the order of the day. Equally suitable for wearing to the office, on evenings out or while just pottering around at home, a pair of loafers can be just the thing to fill a gap in your summer wardrobe. Here’s our guide to loafers and how to wear them this summer.

The History of Loafers – From Georgian England and Norway’s Fishing Boats to American Colleges

Chatham Women's Penny Suede Loafers - Baby Blue

Chatham Women’s Penny Suede Loafers – Baby Blue

According to some, the first loafers were designed by a British bespoke shoe company for King George VI and were intended to be worn as house shoes. Low-heeled and laceless, they were similar in style to moccasins and later became popular shoes for outdoor wear.

However, others claim that loafers were introduced in 1930 by Tveranger Gregori, a Norwegian who had spent seven years in the USA learning the art of shoemaking. He apparently based his design on both the moccasins worn by Native Americans and the moccasin-style shoes worn by Norwegian fisherman.

Similar slip-on shoes were launched by other footwear companies and, during the 1930s, the term loafers came to be used to describe them. They became particularly fashionable amongst American college students and are still thought of as must-have shoes for anyone wanting to create a preppy look.

Popular Loafer Styles – Penny Loafers

 Chatham Women's Sally Penny Loafers

Chatham Women’s Sally Penny Loafers

One particular style of loafer, made by G.H. Bass, was a favourite  with American students, who began to refer to them as ‘penny loafers’ due to the fact that a penny could be slotted into the diamond shape cut out at the front of each shoe.

Whether pennies were simply worn in the loafers as a fashion statement or because two pennies could be used to make an emergency call during the 1930s - making them handy for students when out on dates or at parties - is a matter of debate. However, the name stuck and is still used today for loafers that feature the classic diamond cut-out, such as our gorgeous premium leather Women’s Sally Penny Loafers.

Popular Loafer Styles - Tassel Loafers

Chatham Women's Atlantis Tassel Loafers - Navy

Chatham Women’s Atlantis Tassel Loafers - Navy

The origins of tassel loafers are unclear but one story says that the American-Hungarian actor, Paul Lukas, took a pair of Oxford shoes with tasselled laces to stores in New York and Los Angeles, asking them to make him something similar. Two stores contacted the same shoe manufacturing company who, spotting a potential gap in the market, designed a slip-on shoe with a decorative tassel, which was launched in 1950.

The tassel loafer was certainly one of the footwear styles of choice amongst the trendsetters in New York and Los Angeles during the 1950s, and was usually teamed with a suit. Like the penny loafer, the tassel loafer has stood the test of time and contemporary versions are extremely popular with both men and women.

Our Women’s Atlantis Tassel Loafers, for example, are firm favourites with Chatham customers. Made from premium leathers, they boast slip-resistant, siped soles and EVA padded socks for comfort, and come in a selection of appealing shades.

Traditionally, loafers have a moccasin-style construction, a separate sole, a low front and a low heel, differentiating them from other types of slip-on shoes. Some contemporary slip-on shoes, however, blend features of the loafer with other elements to create attractive and comfortable modern alternatives.

Our Men’s Gaff II G2 Boat Shoe, for example, blends the traditional boat shoe and penny loafer styles beautifully to give you a premium shoe with the famous diamond cut-out, low heel and moccasin construction but with a grip-enhanced sole, rot-proof thread and rust-proof eyelets.

You can also find loafer-style driving shoes, such as our Men’s Fowler Driving Moccasins and our Women’s Tropez Driving Moccasins, which incorporate the practical features needed when you’re on the road, such as studded soles to give you grip.

Loafers – How to Wear Them This Summer

Chatham Women's Sandy Penny Loafers - Mango

Chatham Women’s Sandy Penny Loafers - Mango

Loafers exude style and men can team a smart leather pair with linen trousers or chinos to create a smooth summer look for the office or for evenings out. Tassel loafers are still a great option for wearing with a lightweight suit, but will look just as good with a pair of jeans and a vintage t-shirt.

Classy leather women’s loafers are a fantastic match for smart trousers or can be used dress up a pair of jeans, while colourful canvas loafers, like our Women’s Sandy Penny Loafers, with their adorable stripes and fringe detail, will look great with a pair of capri trousers or cut-offs on seaside strolls.

Practical options for summer, loafers can be worn with or without socks too, so they are beautifully versatile.

Will you be wearing loafers this season? What will you team them with? Let us know by leaving a comment or by chatting to us on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

It’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and, as the Official Footwear Sponsor of this renowned regatta, we’re there showing off our sailing shoes, sailing boots and deck shoes. To celebrate this action-packed event, here’s a handy guide to the footwear every sailor should have in his or her kit bag.

If you’re planning to head out on the water regularly, it’s a good idea to pick up a pair of high-quality shoes that have been designed with the needs of sailors in mind. The key to choosing a great pair of sailing shoes is to look for styles that are packed with practical features – and, if you opt for some that are stylish and versatile enough to be worn while you’re participating in other activities, you’ll get even more for your money.

Chatham Men's Aqua-Go Breaker G2 Performance Sailing Shoes - Grey

Our award-nominated Men’s Aqua-Go G2 Performance Sailing Shoes, for example, feature our advanced Aqua-Go Tread+ System, as well as razor cut siping on the soles to give you outstanding grip when it’s wet. They also dry exceptionally quickly, thanks to a unique, three-layer drainage system. Ultra-light for convenience, they are anatomically designed, so you’ll be able to enjoy the superb comfort that comes from wearing a barefoot-style shoe while you’re on deck.

Chatham Men's Aqua-Go Coasteer G2 Performance Sailing Shoes - Camel

Versatile enough to be worn when participating in a wide range of activities, including kayaking and hiking as well as sailing, our Aqua-Go G2 Performance Sailing Shoes are available in three striking styles – the Mist, Breaker and Coasteer. We stock each style in a selection of appealing colours too. When you buy a pair, we'll also donate money to our partner and the Official Charity of this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, youth sailing charity, UKSA.

Sailing Boots – Keep Your Feet Warm When You’re At Sea

If you’re a keen sailor, you’ll find that good sailing boots are essential when tackling rough seas, particularly in winter, as they’ll keep your feet cosy even when water gets on the deck. The most important thing to look for when choosing sailing boots is to ensure that they are waterproof, so that your feet will stay dry. You should also choose comfortable, breathable sailing boots that provide you with the grip and support you need while you’re on the water.

Chatham Men's Rig Waterproof Sailing Boots - Navy

Our Men’s Rig Waterproof Sailing Boots, Men’s Finn Waterproof Sailing Boots  and Women’s Catamaran Sailing Boots, for example, are all waterproof and boast bamboo membrane linings for breathability. They also have non-slip, non-marking rubber soles, so you’ll get excellent grip without damaging the deck.

This year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week has just come to an end – and it’s been an amazing event. As proud Official Footwear Sponsors of the world-famous regatta, we were at the centre of the action. Here’s our Cowes Week round-up.

Sam Matson and ‘Chatham’ – Looking Good on the Water at Cowes Week

Sam Matson and Chatham at Cowes Week 2015

Sam Matson and guests in action at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2015

Cowes Week is all about the sailing – and our sponsored sailor, Sam Matson, was out on the water in his trusty Figaro, ‘Chatham’ throughout Cowes Week, as he battled fellow Artemis Offshore Academy skippers and their crews in the Artemis Hunters Challenge. Sam put in a great performance, finishing in third place overall after the six races.

Sam, together with ADPR Ltd’s Managing Director, Alice Driscoll, also took on the other Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week sponsors as Team Chatham in the regatta’s One Hour Victory Race. Last year, Alice and Chatham brand ambassador, Heather Fell, won the race for Chatham, so the pressure was on. Alice and Sam did a brilliant job, however, finishing the 2015 race in second place.

Raising Money for UKSA – Team Chatham at Cowes Week

Chatham MD, Phil Marsh, takes on the Boss Up a Mast Challenge to fundraise for UKSA

Chatham MD, Phil Marsh, heading 100 feet up a mast to fundraise for UKSA

Our MD, Phil Marsh, tested his head for heights and raised money for our partner and the Official Regatta Charity, UKSA, by taking their Boss Up a Mast Challenge. He was hoisted 100ft to the top of the mast of an ocean-going yacht in the middle of Cowes Yacht Haven - luckily, he was wearing his Chatham Compass II G2 Boat Shoes, so he had plenty of grip.

He also presented UKSA with a cheque for money raised from the sale of our Aqua-Go sailing shoes. We donate one pound to this fantastic youth sailing charity for every pair of Aqua-Go Mist, Coasteer or Breaker G2 Performance Sailing Shoes that we sell. You can find out more about the range in our earlier blog post, “Making an Impression – Chatham Aqua-Go G2 Performance Sailing Shoes”.

5 Perfect Places to 'Take A Hike' This Weekend.

We Brits do love a stroll. Especially along our coastal line or the countryside! Whether its couples taking a romantic Sunday stroll, families going for a walk with the dog or groups of friends just looking to take in the best of what Britain has to offer, our countryside and coastal lines make for great hikes and opportunities to use our walking boots!

Across our spectacular isles are some magnificent landscapes. We’ve put together our top 5 perfect spots to help with your next expedition!

Burrator Reservoir, Dartmoor, Devon.

Nestled just inside the south side of Dartmoor, Burrator Reservoir is famous for Sunday strolls and days out amongst the local towns. A 4 mile stretch around the reservoir, on this delightful walk you’ll find an array of shades of green amongst opportunities to explore new routes each time round. Don’t be surprised if you’re joined by a horse or two either!

Lands End, Cornwall.

Referred to as Belerion by ancient Greek times, meaning ‘the shining land’, Lands End is full of British history and culture that makes it the perfect destination for a journey of discovery. Amongst the walking around the cliffs (and finding a Fish ‘n’ Chip shop), there are easier strolls through to beaches such as Sennen close and Pednvounder that show just why Cornwall has some of the most beautiful coastal lines in Britain.

Lake District, Cumbria.

No list would be complete without including Lake District in Cumbria. One to add to the bucket list, Lake District is the UK’s largest National Park filled with north English highlands as well as the beautiful lake that offers luscious greenery and iconic views. There are so many routes to take, you’ll spend a (worthwhile) decade journeying through them.

Glen Etive, Glen Coe, Scotland.

If you’re ever in the area, Glen Etive is worth a hike! Famous for featuring in Skyfall, Glen Etive offers the opportunity to trek through the dramatic valley’s of the Scottish highlands where in one instance you’ll be experiencing snow and in another you’ll see the brightest blue skies that encapsulate everything that is beautiful about this countryside walk.

5 Alternative Places to Sail Away

$

Chatham pride ourselves on our deck shoes and sailing footwear. However, we haven’t actually ever given you advice on where is best to sail away or around and give you a chance to wear your new shoes! Well that’s changing as we’ve comprised a list of 5 potentially alternative, but sweet spots worth sailing to or around. There’s plenty of lists you’ll find online that give you the same ‘French Riveria’, ‘Turkey’, ‘The Grenadines’ etc. but we’re going to go for some destinations slightly left field so that you can find somewhere new, experience something different and broaden your horizons as you sail around this beautiful world:

Salcombe, Devon.

On your very own doorstep there are plenty of destinations to sail to for a weekend away and Devon & Cornwall are rife with them. More specifically is Salcombe in Devon. Salcombe has a history in fishing, seafaring, boat and ship building and is a key destination for holidaymakers to take a trip down here, especially during the regatta week. There are many key British clothing brands that owe their heritage to their original stores which reside in Salcombe, alongside new boutiques and also a beautiful harbor that homes some delicious eateries.

Image of Salcombe Harbour

Salcombe harbour, famed for it's regatta, beautiful beaches and great eateries.

Nida, Lithuania

Lithuania? Many of us may not even know where to find this on a map, however, Lithuania faces the south side of the Baltic Sea and in particular, Nida - a small resort town that is located on the Curonian Spit and is thought to be the spits ‘hot spot’. This old fashioned fishing village homes beautiful sand dunes such as the Parnidis Dune (Parnidzio Kopa), that has a 52m summit where you’ll be able to see the stunning views of untouched dunes stretching into Russia. There are two mooring piers, one for fishing and another for passenger boats and many of Lithanuia’s capital city hot spots have businesses in Nida for the summer season, be sure to visit ‘In Vino’ and try the prawns!

Noumea, New Caledonia

What looks like it should be in any and every holiday broucher but isn’t, is Noumea, New Caledonia. This exclusive island is part of the French New Caledonia South Province and homes the worlds largest lagoon (24,000ft)! Home to many Europeans, Polynesian, Indonesian and Vietnamese populations, Noumea lies on a protected deep water harbor that serves as the chief port for the country. The capital is also home to French-influenced eateries and luxury boutiques to occupy you on days you’re not exploring these glorious waters.

Image of Noumea, New Caledonia bay

Monaco? No, It's Orphelinat Bay, Noumea.

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, Italy

In the high summer Costa Smeralda is full of super yachts in its crystal clear waters and fine beaches. For you sailing fans, this is where the Rolex Swan Cup is held from. The local market towns offer hidden treasures and many ruins or tombs to explore in such areas as Arzachena, Porto Cervo & Cannigione. For more of a relaxed and food dedicated sail, there are charming villages such as San Pantealeo & Olbia where you’ll find lovely cafes and artisan shops. A Real cultural coast with picturesque views and beautiful shores, perfect for a family sail!

Image of Costa Smeralda Yacht Harbour

Costa Smerala, Sardinia where the Rolex Swan Cup is held.

Turks and Caicos, Caribbean

What list of sailing destinations would be complete without visiting Turks and Caicos? Not this one, that’s for sure. 40 beautiful low-lying coral islands southeast of the Bahamas, in particular the area of providencailes which is home to the some of the clearest waters and white sand beaches known to man in Grace Bay and Taylor bay – the perfect destination for rest, relaxation. But if you’re more inclined to get out and about, you can choose from whale watching, fishing through to paddle boarding and bird watching and the famous ‘Fish Fry’ market where you’ll hear local music, eat traditional food and shop for local crafts.

Been to any of these destinations? Don’t forget to tell us about it, we’d love to know of any ‘hidden spots’ worth exploring. Alternatively, we’d love to hear of any additional places worth setting sail and exploring! Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook too.

A Modern Twist On A Classic - The Desert Boot

The traditional desert boot is a fashion favourite throughout men’s footwear! Historically made with a suede upper and creped sole, inspired by the South African Veldskoen and worn by the British Military, this shoe is now one of the more popular shoes around the fashion world for trendy men.

Image of Desert Boot

The original 'Desert Boot'

However, throughout the hard English winter, where rain and freezing cold temperatures dominate the country, to continue to wear this boot can become a dreadful task. Therefore, we decided to blend the combination of both the ‘Chukka’ and the ‘Desert’ boots accordingly to create a shoe that was fashionable to wear throughout any season, that doesn’t soak easily in the rain and is extremely comfortable… Thus, the Tor Desert Boot was created!

Supporting Our Lions

Big, big Rugby fans here at Chatham and regular attendee’s throughout the Exeter Chief’s season. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed this year’s world cup (even though we’re already out). Being close friends with former Chief’s Lock, Chris Bentley, he got in touch about Chatham supplying the Classic Lions with our Bermuda Deck Shoes for their upcoming World rugby tour which, coincidently, will be being held in Bermuda.

Ex Exeter Chiefs Lock - Chris Bentley

The Classic Lions were created at the Bermuda World Rugby Classic in 1997 when England Classic Team failed to raise a team to play in the World Rugby Classic tournament.

In order for players to qualify to play for the Classic Lions they must be over the age of 33 years by the 1st November and retired from international rugby for at least one year. The Classic Lions represent the legends of British Rugby and will ensure that these talented and well respected players remain in the lime light well after their retirement from the professional game.

For the past 17 years the Classic Lions have played in the World Rugby Classic which is held in Bermuda. Other participating countries that play in the Classic are: Classic All Blacks, Classic Springboks, Classic Wallabies, Classic Pumas, Team America, Classic France, Classic Italy and Team Canada.

Image of Classic Lions Rugby Team

The Bermuda World Rugby Classic began in 1987 when former British Lions lock forwards Allan J. Martin and Mike Roberts organised a Welsh Team to play in Bermuda. In 1988 the Welsh Team were joined by Classic All Blacks, led by the legend New Zealand All Black Andy Haden, Classic England, Classic Scotland, Classic Ireland and a team from the U.S.A. On this occasion in 1988 Classic Wales were the first winners defeating Classic England in the final. But the following years saw the Classic All Blacks dominating the World Rugby Classic. In 1993 Wales, Scotland and Ireland combined to form the Celtic Barbarians then later in 1997 became the Classic Lions and under the management of Allan J. Martin have won the World Rugby Classic 8 times.

In 2014, the Lions defeated America and South Africa on route to reach the final however, were beaten by a star studded New Zealand side in the final.

Their aim this season is to go one better and with a very strong squad being announced and a combined cap total of over 300, their aim could very well be achievable!

With the tournament being a month away, we’re extremely excited to be supplying our shoes to the Lions and cannot wait for the event to begin. Stay up to date by following Chris on Twitter, or visiting the Classic Lions Website and don't forget to tag us on Instagram if you're out and about in Bermuda!

A Game Pie That Will Tickle Your Taste buds.

We’re two thirds of the way through October now and the pheasant shooting season is in full flow. Often, a few of us go out on game shoots throughout the season (of course wearing our Chargot Waterproof Country Boots), and this will often see the team bringing back braces of game for the guys back in the office to take home and cook a scrumptious dinner.

Image of Game Shooting

Rob from Piper's Farm Shooting.

Our friends over at Pipers Farm are cut from the same cloth and are keen game shooters too; occasionally participating as part of a team of guns, but also spend their time out scouting the hedgerows and cover crops with their spaniels searching for the quarry in question.

Image of working Cocker-spaniel with Pheasant

Holly the dog Fetching a Pheasant.

In Devon and Cornwall, you'll find there's hot competition for places due to the rise in popularity in country sports in recent years. However, if you find yourselves with an opportunity to go out on a shoot, we suggest you take it as it's certainly a great experience

Once you’ve managed to successfully find and flush, or retrieve a bird, your imagination can start to run wild with all the ways in which you can cook your fresh and tasty game.

Now that we've got food on your mind, it's the perfect time to tell you that Piper’s Farm have kindly provided us with a recipe for their ‘A Great Game Pie’ as well as a voucher for our Chatham friends and followers to use at the Pipers Farm website. Email us for the details!

A ‘Great Game Pie’ – 8 people.

24 hours Marinating, 4 hours making.

Ingredients:

For the Filling

1kg of diced game (this can be rabbit, pigeon, venison, pheasant, partridge or mallard)

150ml port

2 tbsp brandy

500g Saddleback Lardo, very finely diced

500g Saddleback Pork Mince

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp ground nutmeg

2 garlic cloves, crushed

Small handful of fresh parsley, chopped

200g streaky bacon rashers

Salt and Pepper to season to taste

800ml of stock

1 tbsp juniper berries

10g gelatine

800g of Hot Water Crust pastry

1 free range egg, to glaze

How to!

1. The first step starts the day before the baking, marinating the meat overnight in the port, brandy and thyme.

2. Pre-heat your oven to 150ºC, then butter your pie tin thoroughly.

3. Mix the lardo and pork mince together with the cinnamon, ginger, garlic, nutmeg, parsley and salt and pepper. Split into 4.

4. Get 600g of your pastry and roll it out to a size large enough to line your pie tin. The remaining 200g will make the lid. Work the pastry around your tin.

5. Next line the pastry with the rashers of bacon.

6. Add in your first layer of pork mix, followed by half of the marinated game, followed again with a layer of pork, then game and finally with a layer of pork.

7. Top the pie with the pastry lid and squeeze the edges together to make a decorative rim. Then glaze with an egg and cut a small steam hole in the centre.

8. Cover and bake for 2hrs, then uncover and cook for a further 45 minutes until the pastry has turned golden.

9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool while you warm your stock, juniper berries and gelatine slightly. Once the pie has cooled and the stock mixture has warmed slightly, pour it carefully and slowly into the steam hole until all of the crevices in the pie have been filled and no more stock can be retained.

10. Leave to chill a little longer to allow the jelly in the stock to has a chance to set and then serve.

11. This pie goes fabulously well with our Pipers Farm Chutneys.

Image of Pipers Farm's great game pie.

A tasty treat packed full of rich meat.

This is just one way to make an amazing pie. All depends on the game you have! This recipe is purposely made with a slightly stiff stuffing so you can take it out on a shoot day and cut it up and share it without the filling going everywhere! But if you’re having this at home, there’s always room for some glorious gravy to further enhance the taste and that countryside side foodie feel!

Welcome Jack Nowell

He bulldozed his way through London Irish’s defence for his second try over the weekend. Just one of many to come for England rugby star Jack Nowell as he made his return to rugby union for the Exeter Chiefs after the 2015 World Cup. Famed for his hair style, tattoo’s, his friendly and outgoing personality and exceptional talents, Jack Nowell is fast becoming a poster boy for the future of English Rugby. For club and country he defines; power, strength, resilience and pace. A perfect combination and it's no surprise that when we had the opportunity to have him become a ‘Chatham Ambassador’, we converted the kick to score his name on our team sheet!

Jack in action for England Six Nations

Similarly to Chatham shoes, Jack is built for purpose; a marauding full-back that can also play on the wing or at outside centre. Strong, long-lasting and crafted extremely well, we both felt Chatham and Jack were the perfect fit for each other and it comes as no surprise that this led him to picking the ‘Lewis’ Goodyear Welted Brogue and ‘Forest’ Wellie to become part of his shoe cupboard!

Image of Jack Nowell at Chatham's showroom

Great outfit! Shoes go well with the sport shorts!

Moving back to Rugby, Jack made his international debut against France on February 1st 2014 and on his Rugby World Cup debut he scored a hattrick against Uruguay. He joined professional Rugby 5 years ago when he moved up to Devon from Truro (after being a part of Mounts Bay Academy). He has performed to a high level consistently in the Aviva Premiership since 2012, for England U18’s, U20’s and the Men’s First Team, competing in the RBS Six Nations and this year’s Rugby World Cup.

Try, try, try!

New Made In Britain Collection - SS16

January the 18th 2014, the day in which Chatham Managing Director Philip Marsh decided it was time for Chatham to create a range of footwear that were ‘Made In Britain’. A very first for Chatham; a shoe designed at our HQ in Exeter, Devon, sourced leather from world famous British leather tannery – CFStead and crafted back at Chatham HQ in our brand new factory!

“I’d been toying with the idea soon after the 2012 Olympics. Britain was seen in a really positive light and the GB brand export was growing rapidly; especially in China and the USA.” Explains Phil.

“Whilst the British economy was increasing, I wanted Chatham to be a part of this, and come 2014 I took the plunge after seeing 2 years of exponential growth for Britain. We built space for a new factory and increased the opportunity for jobs within the local area. We sourced British KUDU leather from Leeds as part of the components and I am proud to say we’re a part of helping Britain boom economically and helping people within Devon get into work.”

Fast forward through to 2015 and more specifically August. Chatham hired the professional expertise of Simon Litherland – a photographer with superb pedigree and ability to capture the essence of the Chatham brand from a heritage and fashionable aspect. Simon had contacts with Morgan Motors – the family owned, iconic British manufacturing company – a match made in heaven and a perfect fit for Chatham.

“Very much like ourselves, Morgan Motors have a strong, British heritage and values whilst also being family owned. It was a no brainer and we couldn’t be more happy with the photoshoot outcome.” Said Phil.

“It was important for us be fully ‘British’ throughout this campaign as we felt this would complement the entire lifecycle of the development.”

Current British fashion trends show that the ‘British’ branding is a current trend across the world, more specifically in the US and China. Therefore it’s more important than ever to offer a GB crafted shoe that supports your feet not just from a fashion perspective, but from a lifestyle one too. Thus the innovative ‘sole step’ sole has been created and implemented into the Chatham MiB collection to offer maximum comfort from a memory foam that makes the shoe individual to you!

The next steps for us are now to prepare showcase these beautiful products across the world in preparation for Spring/Summer 2016, and continue the designing of the ‘deck boot’ for AW16 amongst growing the collection long term and working in collaborations to design beautifully made, technically superb and honestly British made shoes. So keep your eyes open for the 8 lines coming Spring 2016.

Goodyear Welted - Good for the Sole

Whatever happened to finely made shoes? It feels like it’s a dying art? So many retail stores bombard us with so many poorly welted shoes these days that it feels like second nature for us to buy a pair of shoes, wear them for a month or two, they split or wear easily and we bin them. What happened to loving our feet? Both from a fashion perspective and a health and support one too!

Step forward the Goodyear Welt. The oldest and most durable of the three methods of shoe construction, the Goodyear welt has stood long throughout time for a reason – because there are communities out there who still believe in the craft of a quality made shoe, one that will last a lifetime and support your feet at the all the way. You may grow old, but a pair of 'Nottingham’ brogues or 'York' Brogue Boots are likely to stay looking after you for years to come and keep you on trend. Here’s why:

Goodyear Welted, it's a lifestyle.

Two level stitching makes it incredibly easy to re-sole a GYW shoe due to the welt acting as a cushion between the insole and the outsole. Meaning the upper can be reattached to a new sole time and time again! That extra layer also provides further resistance from water and is far more supportive than the other welt constructions.

As a result, the sole is often chunkier, but within a fashion focused world, a shoe like this with a strong supporting sole is just as important as the detail that goes into the upper material, the laces and eyelets, or the shape of the last.

A fashion incon.

Speaking of the last, the outsole is stretched over the last and attached along with the insole in order to keep that water away, very important! We’re not fans unintentionally wet feet.

Finish that off with sewing the upper, welt and insole rib together and hey presto, a Mona Lisa within footwear has been created!

A slightly more expensive than your average shoe, but a must have in the wardrobe. The proof is well… within itself! An ever-lasting shoe that has stood tall and maintained itself throughout time, supporting your feet and staying with the trends, even if it doesn’t need centre stage.

We Brits do love a stroll. Especially along our coast line or the countryside!
